SARS-CoV-2 is a coronavirus newly identified in January 2020 in the Chinese city of Wuhan, Hubei Province. The virus is the cause of the disease called COVID-19 (corona virus disease 2019) and triggered the COVID-19 pandemic, which the WHO classified as a pandemic on March 11, 2020. In the media and in public perception, SARS-CoV-2 is often referred to as a novel coronavirus, coronavirus, simply corona or occasionally as the Covid-19 virus.
