name of the term: Colloid osmotic pressure

descriptions of the term:

Colloid osmotic pressure

The colloid osmotic pressure is determined by proteins. It occurs in human body fluids such as e.g. the blood plasma. Here the albumin decisively determines the colloid osmotic pressure. It is essential for maintaining the plasma volume. If the loss of albumin leads to a drop in the colloid osmotic pressure, the fluid that has leaked into the interstitium does not return to the circulation. Oncotic edema develops.
